A self-confessed music and sports nut, Chris Tippelt is also a freelance photographer who specialises in commercial and creative photography.

“I got hooked on photography after receiving my first digital SLR camera from my parents when I was a teenager and, just like macaroni and cheese or beer and salty bar snacks, I knew I’d found my perfect match. What I love most about it is its diversity – no two shoots are ever the same. My studio can be anything from a remote mine site hundreds of kilometres from nowhere, to a crowded train carriage in the middle of downtown Tokyo or a sports stadium packed to the rafters with thousands of cheering fans. All I need is my camera and I can capture a moment in time that will never happen again.”

I learnt the ropes as a cadet with the official photographers of the Queensland Reds Super Rugby team, combining my passion for photography with my love of sport. It taught me how to think on my feet to get that great shot which was definitely a baptism of fire but one I wouldn’t change for the world.

While studying Engineering at university I joined an international sports imaging agency based on Queensland’s Gold Coast as a freelance photographer, shooting golf, tennis and cricket tournaments across Australia. I’ve travelled internationally to Japan on assignment to shoot a World Series baseball game, as well as to the US with the NBA shooting basketball and know what it is like to work on deadline, filing images so they can be run in papers the next day.

After a few years I decided to expand my horizons and added portrait, event and commercial photography to my portfolio. Being able to take the time to compose a shot was a refreshing change from sports photography, where you only have a split second to react, cross your fingers and hope it all works out for the best! As my corporate clients range from small businesses to large national and international companies, on any given day I could be on location on a mine site in a remote regional community, or in an inner city office shooting professional headshots of a board of directors – and everything in between.

I’m also thankful that in all of my travels I have been able to squeeze in some creative work by indulging in my passion for music and street photography. I enjoy trying to capture a moment in time, or the essence of a community or culture through my images, transporting people to imagine they were there at that exact moment in time, riding home on that crowded train in Shinjuku after a long day at work.

At the end of the day what I enjoy most about photography is knowing that with every photo I take I am capturing a moment in time that will never happen again – and embracing the diversity and creative challenges that come with these experiences. Knowing that every job and client is unique, with differing requirements and needs, and translating that into a solution through photography is what gets me out of bed every morning. And when I am being invited to photograph special moments – from weddings to family portraits – it is humbling to know that I am helping to capture and preserve lifelong memories.

So now that you know a little bit about me, if you are looking for somebody to help make your photographic visions a reality, please don’t hesitate to contact me – I’d love to help.
